Are you a fan of Apple? Roku? Facebook? Netflix? We thought so. That means you’re a fan of over-the-top (OTT) communication services. These services are consumed by using network services from a service provider.
The OTT communications services market is currently experiencing exponential growth. Just consider that the number of global subscribers for OTT services like Netflix and Amazon Prime is set to increase from 92.1 million in 2014 to 333.2 million by 2019. There are no two ways about it: OTT services are dominating today’s consumer landscape.
Here’s why we’re most certainly down with OTT (and why you should be, too!):
Low cost (or free) communications
If you use Skype, ooVoo or any other VoIP service, then you know the wonderful feeling of being able to conduct voice and/or video calls over your service provider’s network while spending little-to-no money. Businesses and consumers alike use these cost-efficient services to save on both local and international calls and SMS. Looking ahead, we’re now seeing a new era of OTT messaging services like Snapchat becoming applicable for business communications.
Convenience is the name of the game with OTT services. You can use them anytime, anywhere and, if you’re using them over a Wi-Fi network, for free. Whether you’re pulling an all-nighter in the office and want to stream Spotify or need to pull up a YouTube clip during a strategic meeting, there are ample professional and personal benefits to convenient OTT communications services.
OTT might be hurting network service providers, but it’s extremely advantageous for end-users. In the past, service providers have tried to find ways to profit off of OTT communications services—for example, some have been caught backing down on plans to charge consumers extra for using VoIP services. Overall, however, most providers see OTT services as a new opportunity to embrace innovative change in order to deliver better customer experiences.
OTT communications services clearly aren’t going anywhere anytime soon. This is great news for customers, and a welcome challenge for service providers looking to stay one step ahead of the curve.
