5 Things Your Boss Wants to Know About Caller ID

Your boss has had it. While you were away for the week basking in the last few days of summer sunshine on the beach, he was stuck screening his own phone calls. He had no idea who was calling the office, couldn’t see whose desk he reached when he made a call, and was not able to successfully avoid calls from his ex. He's not happy. First thing Monday morning he calls you into his office and yells, “I can’t take it anymore! We need to now who's calling and they need to know who's calling them. Tell me what I need to know.” And so begins your research. Soon enough, you’re ready to present to him five things your boss wants to know about Caller ID.

1. Differences

First, you’ll want to let your boss know the differences between what the caller sees and what the person receiving the call is seeing. You’ll sound ever-so-intelligent if you refer to it by its formal name—CNAM (Caller ID Name). Also, you can tell him all about Inbound CNAM and Outbound CNAM once you read our post from last week.

2. Whose Responsibility Is It?

The displaying of the Caller ID is the responsibility of the receiving phone company. Let’s say your boss calls a VoIP Innovations' DID, it is our responsibility to accurately display the correct record. Just like if he were to call a Verizon telephone number, it would then be Verizon's responsibility to display the correct information for him to see. 


3. CNAM Storage Is on the DID Itself

Throughout the rest of this post, we’re going to mention CNAM Storage, so we will define it for you now. Outbound CNAM is also known as Outbound Caller ID and that is referred to as CNAM Storage. But keep in mind that only certain carriers support this feature. We’re telling you that now because if this is a feature that’s important to you, be sure you select DIDs capable of supporting this. Your boss will probably ask, “How much is this going to cost me?” Let him know there aren’t any additional charges for CNAM Storage. Simply select the DIDs that will support it and you’re good to go.

4. Two Ways to Add CNAM Storage

CNAM Storage can be added to your DIDs in two different ways--it’s up to you depending on your personal preference and/or how many numbers you have. Either add it in bulk or add it one DID at a time. 5. Like Twitter, There is a Character Limit

The possibilities are not endless where name entries are concerned, so keep this in mind.  It doesn’t matter which method you choose to use regarding entering CNAM Storage information—the entries can only be 15 characters or less and that includes spaces. As an example, you could use HELLOHOWAREYOUU or HELLO HOW ARE U. That’s not our rule; this limitation is set by the industry and can’t be changed.
