5G: What It Means for Your Business

First it was 3G. Currently, it’s 4G LTE. Now, the world is preparing for a new era of wireless networking: 5G.

While it's not here yet (industry pundits anticipate mainstream rollouts around 2020), it has without question evolved in recent years from a futuristic concept to a very real solution that redefines network security and the user experience. In fact, Juniper Research estimates that $25 billion will be invested into its research, trials, and development over the next five years.

It’s no wonder so many funds are being allocated to this, with experts touting it as being capable of delivering network speeds that are 10x faster than 4G with 1ms latency or less. Overall, this service revenue is set to exceed $65 billion by 2025, according to the abovementioned research. Considering the technology’s slated rollout of 2020, this is an astronomical, almost incomprehensible, figure.

There’s no question that 5G offers more benefits than business leaders can imagine. But what does it really mean for businesses? For starters, it means a truly transformed mobile user experience (UX). With speeds that are 10 times faster than 4G LTE, a web page that takes five seconds to load will do so in half a second on a 5G network. This is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to how it will revolutionize your employees’ mobile experiences and increase productivity, collaboration, and user satisfaction.

So, how can forward-thinking business leaders keep a finger on the pulse of this emerging solution? Here are a few quick tips:

  • Reimagine how your business designs online experiences for employees collaborating internally, as well as for customers engaging with your brand.
  • Rethink your data center design; ensure it can meet day-to-day (even hour-by-hour) adjustments in order to meet dynamic changes occurring in today’s enterprise landscape.
  • Reconsider your existing network security strategy; upgrade traditional architecture to ensure it can meet today’s next-generation network demands.

Reimagine. Rethink. Reconsider. The goal is to ride this wave as it crests, versus getting crushed by it as it crashes. To ensure your organization is ready for what’s to come, you must take the necessary steps for 5G-enablement.
