We've all been there. Trapped in a room filled with tech-savvy people throwing around jargon and acronyms like confetti at a wedding. You simply smile and nod, hoping that they will return to conversing in full words about a topic that you understand.

Well, as the old adage says, "if you can't beat them, join them," and one hot topic that will allow you to demonstrate your mastery of technological terminology is "SIP trunking."

What is SIP trunking?

Traditionally, telephone systems have relied on actual wires to enable you to communicate with others. SIP trunking removes the need for a physical wire by, instead, using a virtual phone line or "trunk." It is basically a "Voice over Internet Protocol" that allows users to make phone calls via the internet.

What are the benefits?

By now, you've likely convinced your techie friends and colleagues that you are, indeed, one of them. But, SIP trunking is more than just a lovely bit of lingo. It can also prove to be a very cost-effective method of telecommunicating. Dazzle your audience further by providing them with some concrete reasons to adopt SIP trunking, themselves.

  • No aging equipment. The infrastructure required for a traditional telephone network is aging and expensive to repair. These expenses are passed on to the consumer in the form of hefty rates. Digital Internet Protocol systems do not rely on wiring and switching equipment, so they can provide these services at highly competitive prices.
  • Cheap long distance. Unlike traditional phone services, SIP trunking enables companies to make long distance phone calls at local rates. As a bonus, if a call is being made from one SIP-enabled device to another, they can save even more money.
  • One carrier, one bill. If you are tired of dealing with both a phone company and an internet provider, SIP trunking enables you to roll both services into one. This results in not only less paperwork and hassle, but it also means greater savings. Companies like to reward customers who "bundle" their services, after all.
  • All the benefits of traditional phone service. Giving up your traditional telecommunications provider does not mean you have to part with your creature comforts. SIP trunking still enables you to access 911, use directory assistance, hold conference calls, wear a mobile headset, and convince callers that you are psychic thanks to call display.

What is the down side?

You don't want your audience to mistake you for a SIP trunk salesperson, so it is important that you also share a few important considerations to keep in mind before bidding farewell to their traditional phone lines.

  • They suck up bandwidth. Yup, SIP trunks are to bandwidth what Hummers are to gasoline, particularly if you have many employees using their phones at any one time. It is important to know how much bandwidth you will need to add before making the switch.

    Not all providers are created equal. Some SIP trunking providers charge for calls on a per minute basis just like your traditional telephone provider. This is a great option if your company does not make a large amount of calls. If the nature of your business, however, involves hefty telephone use, you will be better off choosing a provider who offers a flat fee with unlimited calls. It is also important to consider how you are billed per trunk.

The next time you find yourself lost amidst a sea of inscrutable jargon, you will be able to engage in a bit of indecipherable banter of your own. Sweet revenge.
