Next-generation Number Porting: Three Ways to Upgrade Your Process

Posted by Allison Boccamazzo on April 25, 2016 at 10:26 AM

There are some things in life that prove old-school is cool. You can’t go wrong, for example, with a classic arcade game (Space Shooter, anyone?). On the other hand, however, there are things that are meant to adapt to and enhance with the times. Number porting—the process of reassigning a customer’s fixed or mobile number to a new carrier—is one of those things.

Next Generation Number PortingIn today’s advanced, digital world, consumers have more autonomy in choosing their service provider and, more importantly, higher demands and expectations than ever. It’s critical, therefore, that ISPs evolve their technologies and strategic approaches if they wish to remain competitive. This should start with the most fundamental of processes, like number porting.

Here are three ways that ISPs can advance (and, as a result, simplify and streamline) the porting process:

  1. Ditch Paper, Go Electronic

Before a number can be ported, certain information (i.e. main account information, numbers associated with the account, billing telephone number) has to be gathered. Additionally, specific forms, like a letter of authorization (LOA) from the new provider, must be properly completed and submitted. Paper LOAs—which must be completed by hand and faxed or scanned to the new provider—can be unnecessarily timely and costly.

Conversely, an online LOA expedites this critical process; communication will be clearer, human errors will be effectively avoided and overall handling will be more efficient. By ditching paper processes and going electronic, resellers and ISPs can turn ports around quicker for optimal outcomes.

  1. Stop Manual Labor and Start Automating

When critical porting functions are automated, verses handled manually, ISPs can further expedite the porting process upon completion of the necessary paperwork. Again, this will improve throughout and reduce the overall accuracy of ports being submitted. In the end, a seamless and easy porting process is worth its weight in gold; any measure resellers can take to achieve this will prove valuable.

  1. Get 10 Steps Ahead with Provisioning Tools

The ability to plan ahead and make sure that numbers are in fact portable is key to overall success. As such, it’s critical that resellers gain a predictive view of ports using provisioning or porting tools. Such tools enable ISPs to quickly see whether numbers can be ported, as well as gain full transparency into the status of each ported number—from newly submitted ports to completed ports, even to key performance indicators.
