Toll-Free vanity numbers have proliferated our TV screens, billboards and radio stations, and yet they are not an “in-your-face” customer engagement technique. In fact, they’re quite the opposite; vanity numbers have been shown to increase customer response rates by 10 times compared to numeric phone numbers. In other words, they help customers better remember and engage with memorable brands.
There’s no denying that Toll-Free vanity numbers are effective, but did you know that there’s a certain science behind the effectiveness of these numbers?
Vanity numbers have a certain neurological influence on customers, similar to the effect that images have on the brain. Research shows, for example, that when people hear information, they’re likely to remember only 10 percent of that information three days later. On the other hand, if a relevant image is paired with that same information, people are likely to remember 65 percent of the information three days later. Consider the unique letter combination of a vanity number your “relevant image.”
Here are a few tips for crafting a vanity number that capitalizes on these neurological benefits:
- Relevancy is key: A vanity number that is too generic won’t make it past the short-term memory. At the same time, a number that has too many unique characters or spellings may be too difficult for customers to remember. Your vanity number needs to easily make it to your customers’ long-term memories, memorized and stored for future use. Therefore, make your number simple (something that customers can easily associate it with), and not irrelevant or random.
- 800 is the most popular Toll-Free code: But there are others—specifically: 888, 877, 866, 855 and 844. Most customers today recognize the classic 800 Toll-Free code, but that doesn’t mean the others aren’t effective.
- Create a jingle: The old jingle trick still works today. There’s no denying the effectiveness of having a tune promoting your vanity number played across various media channels (who can’t recall at least one jingle from their childhood?)
