Three Fax Myths We Still Can’t Believe Exist

Ah, the fax. It’s a process we’ve all engaged in at least once in our lives (unless you’re a Millennial, more on that below), yet something we all seem to be unfamiliar with. Despite being a pretty straightforward task, it seems there’s still plenty of confusion over the general state of faxing today. Is it dead? Has it taken on new life forms? Do we really still even need it?

Here are three myths about faxing that still seem to exist today:

Fax Myths FoIP Alien Martian

Fax is Dying (If Not Already Dead):

This is surely untrue. As we’ve covered in previous blogs, research suggests that up to 100 billion faxes [AB1] are sent every year worldwide. That’s a lot of faxes.

Traditional Fax Machines Have Gone Extinct:

Overall, traditional fax machines have taken a back seat to more advanced, digital alternatives like fax over IP, or FoIP; however, traditional fax machines are still very much used in industries with strict regulations and high security risks like legal, finance and healthcare. As much as it seems the fax machine is extinct, the truth is that many companies still opt to (or must) rely on the machinery, which was invented almost 200 years ago.

Millennials Don’t Fax:

This one’s a bit blurry. While it’s true that this digitally-inclined generation often chooses not to fax because it’s considered archaic, the truth is that many of these individuals simply don’t know how to use the machinery. Despite this group’s tech-savvy reputation, these younger individuals are often perplexed by traditional workplace equipment. This is why we see so many Millennials either scanning to email or using FoIP.

As we’ve said time and again, the fax is not dead; rather, its method of transport is. As technology continually evolves, so do the ways in which we communicate and collaborate. To learn more about fax—specifically, FoIP—click here.
