Throughout the month of July, our team here at VoIP Innovations has been focused on informing you about automation and many other features that should be included in a VoIP Hosted Billing System. The train doesn’t stop there; today I’m going to explain to you a bit about scalability and integration. These are two of the major players in a successful VoIP billing system, but what makes them so important?

To be quite honest, when I first heard the word scalability, I looked it up online... just to make sure my brain was in the right spot. Defined by Wikipedia: scalability is “the ability of a system, network, or process to handle a growing amount of work in a capable manner or its ability to be enlarged to accommodate that growth.”

Makes sense, right? Basically, it’s your company’s ability to adapt and modify its' systems as you grow. Which leads me to...

Secret #1: Modify as the Company Grows

It is CRUCIAL to choose a billing system that fits your growth patterns. The last thing you want to do is switch billing platforms after you have been established as a company - that would make for everything BUT smooth sailing. So making sure that your platform is highly scalable and that there is plenty of room for change is critical. Whether accommodating for more profits, people, DIDs, etc. every company should have scalability at the top of their to-do list.

Now, "to integrate" is when you combine two or more things into one big thing, yes? Well, you will need to be able to integrate your merchant services, payment gateways, and switch equipment in the billing system you choose. Even your CDRs (call data records) can be integrated into the system, which gives you a deeper look into DID activity and usage.

Secret #2: Merchant Services

First, can your billing system collect online payments? If so, what merchant services and/or payment gateways [Authorize.net, IPPay, PayPal, Wells Fargo, etc.] are compatible with this system? If you ask me, the more vi_icon_Payment_Optionscompatibility, the better. You want to make your system as accessible as possible for your customers, which isn't only beneficial to them, but to you too. Happy customers = happy life, right? You'll also want to see if the billing system allows for the configuration of multiple merchant accounts - MOTO (Mail Order/Telephone Order), internet based, mobile/wireless, etc. - the more the merrier!

Secret #3: Switch Equipment and CDRs

Last but not least, you will want to know if the billing system you choose is compatible with your switching platform (Asterisk, Trixbox, Telinta, FreePBX, etc.) your-voip-billing-system-secrets-to-scalability-and-integrationThere are hundreds of switching platforms out there; you'll want to make certain that this billing system can integrate with your switch. And more specifically, you will want to be sure that this billing platform can seamlessly process the CDRs that your switch produces.
